Can you appreciate how far we have come in regards to weather information?
A few years ago we would listen to the TV or radio for current weather information or forecasts.
Now we can get this information almost instantly with a weather app on our computer or phone.
We can now watch the weather roll into our area by watching the personal weather stations that are popping up around us. Weather instruments are now accessible to everyone.
With a personal weather station of our own, we get a hyper-local and real-time view. We can also set up weather alerts and be notified of dangerous conditions.
But now we can go even deeper!
With the affordable wireless environmental sensors available now, it is possible to monitor conditions in individual rooms and areas.
Just think about how many different areas of your house there are!
- Living rooms
- Laundry room
- Crawl space or basement
- Maybe a Green House
- or a Wine Cellar
- or a Library
Much more than just remote temperature monitoring via the internet…
…with appropriate sensors, you can monitor and be alerted to changes in:
- Air movement
- Barometric pressure
- Air quality
All of this can be seen on your mobile phone from anywhere you happen to be.
With the developing “Smart Home” technologies you can not only monitor whatever you want to but now you can also do something about it.
You can control the conditions in different parts of your house and property separately. Do this from your phone or set desired actions to happen automatically.
Just install the equipment needed to adjust what needs adjusting.
- Dehumidifiers —
- The barometric pressure in a room can be adjusted…a little. Call an HVAC tech
- And so on
We have come a long way. And fast!
Where are we going?
One thing that’s taking off is being able to control your environment automatically. Have you heard of IFTTT? IFTTT stands for “If This, Then That” It’s a web-based app that will initiate actions that you have chosen, for instance turning a ventilator fan on if the humidity reaches a certain point. Click here to read about IFTTT.
So far, from what I have found, the only home weather stations to use IFTTT right out of the box are made by Ambient Weather. And this review is of a home weather station by Ambient made for those on the go.
